The Hollywood Cinema – Exterior Painting Project
Clearview Painting Ltd was proud to carry out the exterior painting of The Hollywood Cinema in Avondale — one of Auckland’s most iconic and longest-running movie theatres. Steeped in history and rich in architectural character, this heritage-listed building deserved a careful, considered approach to ensure its legacy was preserved while refreshing its visual appeal.
Project Overview
Our team was engaged to undertake a complete exterior repaint, with the aim of revitalising the façade while protecting the underlying structure from the elements. The scope included:
- Full washing and preparation of all exterior surfaces
- Timber repairs and minor restoration to age-affected areas
- Application of Resene high-performance paint system
- Recoating of detailed cornices, columns, and classic theatre signage
Special Considerations
As a heritage-listed building with intricate architectural features, The Hollywood Cinema demanded a careful and methodical approach throughout both the preparation and painting phases. To ensure full and safe access, scaffolding was erected around the building, allowing our team to work systematically across all elevations. Each section was treated with precision and care, preserving the historic character while delivering a high-quality finish.
In selecting the new colour palette, we collaborated closely with the Resene Colour Consultancy team. Their expert advice was instrumental in developing a scheme that not only honoured the cinema’s original aesthetic but also introduced a refreshed and harmonious look. The final colours were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the character of the building and its visual role within the Avondale community.
We also worked alongside key stakeholders to ensure the selected finishes respected the building’s vintage style, while upgrading to high-performance coatings capable of withstanding Auckland’s changing weather conditions. The result is a seamless blend of heritage integrity and modern durability.

The result is a beautifully refreshed and weather-The refreshed exterior has brought new life to this treasured community landmark. With its bold lines, crisp finish, and enhanced weather resistance, the Hollywood Cinema now shines once again as a proud focal point of Avondale.
