Aotea Sea Scouts – Exterior Painting Project
We were proud to deliver the full exterior repaint of the historic Aotea Sea Scouts hall, a landmark heritage building situated on the Auckland Onehunga Harbour Road waterfront. This project formed part of our commitment to protecting and revitalising New Zealand’s unique architectural legacy, while ensuring long-term durability through expert painting solutions.
Project Scope
The scope of work included:
- Full exterior surface preparation including washing, sanding, and filling
- Application of Resene low-sheen acrylic paint in heritage-approved colours
- Restoration and repainting of weatherboards, trims, and timber joinery
- Use of scaffolding and edge protection to ensure safe access and compliance
Challenges & Approach
Given the building’s age and exposure to marine conditions, special care was taken in the preparation process to address areas of weathered timber and peeling paint. Our team used flexible fillers and primers specifically formulated for older timber substrates to ensure strong adhesion and a smooth finish.
Colour selections were made in collaboration with stakeholders to maintain the building’s historic character. All paints used were low-VOC and designed for maximum UV resistance, ensuring both environmental safety and long-lasting protection.
Results
The result is a beautifully refreshed and weather-resistant exterior that honours the building’s heritage while significantly enhancing its visual appeal. The Aotea Sea Scouts hall now stands proud with renewed charm and robust exterior protection that will endure the coastal environment for years to come.
